FSC: The European Commission strengthens Ecolabel criteria for wooden floors

07.03.2017 Share

The European Commission recently published the new criteria on EU Ecolabels for wood, cork and bamboo based floor coverings that require chain of custody certificates issued by an independent third party certification scheme such as the Forest Stewardship Council.

The new EU Ecolabel criteria enhances the requirement that most of the virgin wood, cork and bamboo used in the finished products originate from certified sustainably managed forests. The criteria also aim at using sustainably produced materials based on a life cycle analysis approach, limiting the energy consumed or the use of VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) in their production, among other measures.

“This new requirement is important because it boosts demand for certified materials therefore increasing forest certification uptake. It is also an important step to guarantee the origins of these products and confirms a positive trend that ensures that EU Ecolabel criteria for relevant product groups are consistent with what FSC requires for labelling of products,” says John Hontelez, Chief Advocacy Officer at FSC International.
