FSC: Join the Forest Stewardship Council at COP 23

13.11.2017 Share

Forests have always been crucial in solving the challenges presented by climate change. FSC certification can play an important role in the efforts necessary to combat forest degradation, and contribute to mitigating the impacts of climate change.

As a result, FSC has steadily increased participation in discussions around climate change, including annual participation in UN climate conferences. This year, during our 8th general assembly in October, members passed Motion 21, which, amongst other requirements, instructs FSC to apply to the UNFCCC and to join climate change talks.

At the COP 23 conference in Bonn this year, FSC will again participate as an observer organization, and will co-host a side event titled “Forest climate change solutions for governments and the private sector” with the Nature Conservancy and WWF on the 14th of November at our offices located at Charles-de-Gaulle-Straße 5. This event will start at 15:00. Kindly RSVP to Sarah Weber sarah.weber@tnc.org to attend this event. Find out more about this side event here.

FSC has engaged with various organizations and offered the FSC office premises as a venue to host more than 15 COP 23 related events. These events are independently organized.

You can find us at stand F.04.03 in the Bonn Zone where we welcome attendees to visit us and find out more about our work.

COP 23 is poised to move the implementation of the Paris agreement forward as the 2018 deadline to complete the operating manual of the agreement looms. It is also an important opportunity to take stock of progress made thus far.

Addressing embassies in Berlin, Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of UNFCCC stated:

“COP 23 must advance global climate action, action by key groups that hold great potential to truly transform reality – businesses and investors, regions and cities. These groups – non-Party stakeholders in our process – were instrumental to a strong agreement in Paris and further strengthened their support in the Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action. They have also been vocal advocates for climate action in recent months. Businesses and asset owners worth trillions of dollars have reiterated their support for the Paris Agreement. Clean energy, efficient operations, green bonds and sustainable supply chains are already delivering bottom line gains to businesses and investors.”

Join us in discussing the role of FSC certification in furthering these important gains.
