FSC: Revised Trademark Standard for Certificate Holders is now effective
Trademark Standard FSC-STD-50-001 (V2-0) Requirements for use of the FSC trademarks by certificate holders becomes effective, 1 March 2018. Certificate holders are now able to use the FSC trademarks on products and promotional materials following the revised standard. Read the normative document – available via the ‘Downloads’ section below.
The main content changes implemented in the revised standard are as follows:
- Introduction of a trademark use management system as an alternative to submitting all intended uses of FSC trademarks to the certification body for approval.
- Introduction of guidelines for describing FSC and products with FSC claims.
- Reduced size requirements for all marks.
- Greater flexibility in the placement of FSC on-product labels and in choosing labelling elements.
Between December 2017 and February 2018, FSC International organized six webinars to present the changes in the standard to stakeholders. FSC also published a document that compares version V1-2 with V2-0. The document stipulates whether the revised text has changed the requirement and requires an actual change by certificate holders, or whether it is just a clarification, simplification, or rewording which improves understanding. Watch the recording of the webinar and consult the crosswalk document– both available via the ‘Downloads’ section below.
The transition period for this normative document is 12 months, starting 1 March 2018 and ending 28 February 2019. During this period, FSC certificate holders are able to continue using V1-2 for their trademark use, or they may announce to their certification body that they wish to transition to V2-0 of FSC-STD-50-001.
In order to support certificate holders with the implementation of the standard, FSC has revised the Trademark Portal/Label Generator to allow certificate holders to choose the elements they wish to include in the label. The functionalities of the Portal have also been improved.
