The benefits of FSC Certification presented at the First Gabon Wood Show
The Gabon Wood Show, held for the first time in the capital of Gabon, Libreville, attracted thousands of visitors from some thirty different countries. FSC Africa made full use of this opportunity to promote the benefits of FSC certification – as one of around a hundred exhibitors from the forestry sector.
The FSC representatives engaged in discussion and dialogue with both public and private-sector actors attending the event from 20 to 22 June. The FSC delegation consisted of Steve Ball, Africa Director, Mathieu Auger-Schwarzenberg, Congo Basin Director, Liesbeth Gort, Netherlands Director and Ben Romain, Project Coordinator.
The FSC Africa delegation also took part in , an annual technical conference organized by the International Tropical Timber Technical Association (Association technique des bois tropicaux / ) in conjunction with the Gabon Union of Forestry Industries (Union des industries forestières du Gabon / ). Mathieu Auger-Schwartzenberg participated in discussions around the issues of certification, the legality of the tropical timber industry, sustainable development, and innovation. He emphasized the urgent need to implement a strategy to halt the decline in the number of companies seeking certification in the region. At the same time, the FSC Congo Basin Director called for a real dialogue with the new actors in the timber industry, especially those from Asia.
The Gabon Wood Show was inaugurated in the presence of the President of the Republic of Gabon, Mr. Ali Bongo Ondimba. The Head of State reaffirmed the compatibility of forestry with the notion of sustainable development, pointing out that preservation of the environment was a matter of central importance for the forestry sector.
