GRI at COP24: Corporate Reporting for Action on Climate

18.01.2019 Share

In December 2018, GRI participated in the 24th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) – best known as COP24 –in Katowice, Poland. GRI organized several activities aimed at emphasizing the role of corporate sustainability reporting on the SDGS to implement the Paris agreement, particularly through sustainable finance.  GRI, the European Investment Bank and Acclimatise co-organized the panel “Adaptation Finance and TCFD Recommendations: Practices and perspectives from international finance institutions and policy makers”. The discussion centered on the alignment of two initiatives, financial stability (via TCFD) and climate stability (via UNFCCC) and how they can work to mutually reinforce each other and possibly provide delivery mechanisms. GRI looks forward to continue expanding its network on this regard in 2019 and beyond.

GRI also hosted a talk at the EU Pavilion, "How can corporate reporting on the SDGs help implement the Paris agreement through sustainable finance?" After an update on the EU 2050 plan, the panel discussed the different roles which actors such as the EU, national governments, investors, and business can play to enable sustainable investment. One of the conclusions was that the practice of corporate sustainability reporting can help to enable sustainable investments by empowering investors to make informed decisions based on sustainability information disclosed by the private sector.

GRI continues strengthening its environmental Standards, for example through its updated GRI 303: Water standard, and the upcoming review of GRI 306: Waste and Effluents in 2019.
