COSMOTE participates in the “VIMSEN” research project aiming to implement a new platform through which associations of small producers of “green” energy will be given the opportunity to establish the smart energy networks of the future, thus contributing to the promotion of renewable energy sources and environmental conservation.
By utilizing Information and Communication Technologies, this project aims to upgrade the conventional modus operandi of the whole electricity system. According to the project, small producers of “green” energy (e.g. household producers/consumers) will be offered the possibility to establish assertive associations and participate in the free buying and selling of energy, via a new business model. The aim is to conserve energy; to reduce the cost of electricity; to balance the production-and-charge gap; and, of course, to protect the environment by increasing the use of renewable energy sources vis-à-vis more conventional power-producing plants.
In the context of this project, COSMOTE contributes by defining use-cases, technical requirements, system specifications, as well as providing its overall assessment; COSMOTE is also responsible for the architecture of communications support. Moreover, the company will contribute to the evaluation of the data generated by the research program, as well as the establishment of the new business model.
Also participating in the VIMSEN project (http://www.ict-vimsen.eu/) are “Diophantus“, the Computer Technology Institute and Press; DEI (Public Power Corporation); the companies KEMA Nederland BV, INTELEN, TELINT and WATTICS; as well as an association of municipal districts in Italy, where part of the experiments will be conducted in order to assess the pilot platform in actual environmental conditions. The project is co-funded by the EE through the 7th Framework Program and is scheduled to run for 3 years in total.
COSMOTE is actively involved in research and development projects both on a European and national level, already boasting an impressive number of accomplished projects, as well as an international network of collaborators within the industrial and academic communities. Its contribution to the VIMSEN project stems from its environmental strategy, in the context of which COSMOTE tends to the reduction of its impact on the environment. At the same time, it promotes research and innovation in mobile communications, with multiple benefits for both its subscribers and society in general.
