EuroCharity’s Managing Partner, Business Development Manager and Best Practices Ambassador — Michael Spanos, George Tsiakalakis and Sofia Bekatorou, respectively — participated in the 28th Athens Fun Run on Sunday, May 15, dedicated this year to the Special Olympics World Summer Games ATHENS 2011.

Organised by the City of Athens Youth and Sports Organisation (O.N.A.), the annual 8.5-km. city run started at 10:00 a.m. in front of the all-marble Panathinaiko Stadium and terminated at Syntagma Square. O.N.A. aims to promote sports activity and raise public awareness of social and cultural issues. This is achieved through a variety of sports, cultural and social programmes, the continual upgrading of sports facilities and the creation of new recreational venues.

EuroCharity’s Best Practices Ambassador — Double Olympic medalist Sofia Bekatorou, who also serves as member of the Special Olympics World Summer Games ATHENS 2011 Organising Committee — participated with her son Dimitris.

The biggest sporting event for the year 2011
This summer, nearly 7,500 athletes from 180 countries will converge on the most important site in the history of Olympic sport for the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens, Greece.

It will be the world’s largest sporting event of the year, a celebration of the abilities and accomplishments of people with intellectual disabilities and clear progress toward a new global vision of acceptance.

From June 25 through July 4, the World Summer Games will also involve 2,500 coaches, 25,000 volunteers, 3,000 technical officials and referees and tens of thousands of family, friends and fans.

They will gather to watch and cheer as Special Olympics athletes compete in 22 Olympic-style sports in the birthplace of the modern Olympic Games.

Emblem
The Emblem of the Special Olympics World Summer Games ATHENS 2011 is a radiant sun, the source of life that underlines the excellence and power of the athlete that takes part in the Games. Excellence is depicted in the olive branch and power in the spiral form in the centre of the sun. The colours reflect the Greek landscape and project emotions like passion for life in the warm red, optimism in the orange, determination in the blue, freedom in the light blue and hope in the green.

The only games in the world, where all participating athletes are Winners.
Winners in their struggle for our respect in their diversity.
Winners in their struggle for self-esteem.
Winners in their struggle to defend their special abilities.
