Beiersdorf: Sustainability Review 2018

Beiersdorf has published its Sustainability Report 2018. It communicates the most important progress of the past year, provides insights into current projects and makes the current status of target achievements transparent.

Beiersdorf + Sustainability = “We care.”

Our sustainability strategy “We care.”, which had been set-up in 2012, is based on the three pillars “Products, Planet, People”. It covers our activities along the entire value chain: from the sustainable sourcing of raw materials through the health and safety of our employees to the reduction of our ecological footprint and the worldwide support of socially disadvantaged families outside of our company. There are targets for each pillar, our so-called “ambitious commitments”, which we want to achieve by 2020 and 2025, respectively.

With big steps towards target achievement

In the “Products” area we were able to improve immensely compared to the previous year. We have come very close to achieving our ambitious commitment of generating 50% of our sales by 2020 with products that have an improved environmental impact. By the end of 2018 our target has almost been reached with 49%. Among other things, this results from the conversion of our palm oil-based raw materials to certified ingredients from sustainable cultivation. In addition, as part of our “Responsible Sourcing” program, we have initiated a first smallholder project in Western Kalimantan (Indonesia). Together with the “World Wide Fund for Nature” (WWF), we are committed to a sustainable palm oil production and to improving the quality of life of the local population.

In the area of “Planet” we also made good progress and have moved closer to our target for 2025. In particular, we were able to reduce our CO2 emissions per product by 59% in the reporting year and increased our electricity supply from renewable energy sources to 81% worldwide.

In addition, we continued to work on our “Zero Waste to Landfill” target. In 2018, we ended waste disposal at landfills in 21 of our distribution centers, in addition to the already established 16 production centers.

In the “People” area, we are also engaging beyond our corporate environment in order to have a lasting positive influence on the situation of our fellow citizens. In 2013, we set ourselves the target of improving the lives of one million families by 2020. By the end of 2018, we have had a positive impact on the lives of 961,936 families with our global initiatives, almost reaching our target ahead of time.
