COSMOTE participates in the ‘eCall’ project

European project on the development of an automatic emergency call system in case of car accidents

COSMOTE participates in the European project “eCall” for the deployment of a national pilot application of the European automatic emergency call system (eCall) in the case of a car accident. The implementation of eCall will be mandatory for all European Union countries by the end of 2014, while the E.U. is promoting eCall implementation in all new vehicles by 2015.

In the case of a car accident, a call will be activated through the eCall system either automatically though a car sensor or manually at the push of a button. The call will be identified by the mobile telephony network as an emergency call to 112, it will be enhanced by the caller’s location data and will be transmitted to the Public Safety Answering Point. By drastically reducing the time required for the rescue services to be informed and activated, eCall is expected to reduce the severity of injuries, as well as save lives1.

In the framework of the eCall project, COSMOTE is responsible for providing the mobile telecommunications network, as well as for the emergency call routing and the data transmission from the car system to the answering point. It is noted that COSMOTE is actively involved in research & development projects, both at European and national levels, having a track record of successful projects and an international network of partnerships in the industry and academic communities.

The Institute of Communications and Computer Systems (ICCS) of the National Technical University (NTUA) is the project coordinator while Space Hellas S.A. also participates in the project which falls under the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF 2007-2013) and the Operational Programme for Competitiveness and Entrepreneurship (EPAN II). The project is 78.85% co-financed by the National Scope Action “Cooperation” and 21.15% by private bodies participating in the project.
