Eurobank EFG becomes the best large company in Europe in participatory environmental management!

The European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme Award (“EMAS Award 2011”) was won by Eurobank EFG at the European environmental management competition under the large organisations category. 36 companies and organisations representing 15 European countries participated in the competition, where Greece was only represented by Eurobank. It is worth noting that Eurobank is the first bank at a European level to win this award since 2002 when this competition was launched.

Eurobank EFG has participated for three consecutive years (2009-2011) in the EMAS Awards representing Greece in the category of large organisations. Companies and public organisations from European countries participate in the competition competing in specific thematic areas that relate to the method by which they integrate environmental issues into their operations.

This year’s competition on the theme “Stakeholder involvement (including employee involvement) leading to continuous environmental performance improvement was held at Krakow in Poland (the country currently holding the Presidency of the European Council) on Thursday, November 17, 2011.

The Jury of international scientific repute and the European Commission evaluated the environmental training programmes for the bank’s human resources; the innovative and participatory energy saving and recycling programmes; the implementation of “green” criteria in the procurement of goods and services; the information provided to clients and the general public on the “green products”; the support provided to environmental organisations and agencies; and the representation at supreme institutions of significant International Networks, such as the UN, in order to promote environmental responsibility in the financial sector. This highlighted the Eurobank commitment to transparency, credibility, accountability and participation, as integral components for managing environmental issues.
