Because the future belongs to the youth
ΟΤΕ – COSMOTE Scholarships for the academic year 2011-2012 have been awarded today to first-year students from the Greek regions enrolled at Higher Education Institutions. With the programme now celebrating its ten-year anniversary, 42 young men and women received a substantial financial support for their studies, worth a total of EUR 270,456.

This year’s 15 scholarship recipients who are coming from the prefectures of Beotia, the Dodecanese, Elia, Karditsa, Kastoria, Keffalonia, Lasithi, Messinia, Xanthi, Pella, Pieria, Trikala, Florina, Phocis, and Chios, were each awarded the amount of EUR 15,280*. Furthermore, 27 honorary distinctions worth EUR 1,518* each were awarded by COSMOTE to applicants from the same regions who distinguished themselves for their curricular and extracurricular performance.

The long-established event which this year was conducted in a particularly festive atmosphere due to the ten-year anniversary of the programme, took place at the OTE Headquarters in Marousi, in the presence of the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of OTE Mr Michael Tsamaz and the Special Secretary for Primary and Secondary Education Mr Michalis Kontogiannis.

Addressing the audience at the event, Mr Tsamaz, stated among others: “During this difficult period we need to retain our optimism and the hope for a better future for our children, the young people in Greece. It is our responsibility to provide for them schooling and education. To this end, OTE Group further expands its support and strengthens its Scholarship Programme this year.” Addressing the young Scholars and on the point of personal responsibility, Mr Tsamaz said: “You must cherish responsibility. Do not indulge yourselves when things come your way easily. Do not fear difficulty. Your course from now on must be the best answer to all those who doubt us.”

“To be able to offer to a person close to you is very important, but to a certain degree natural. But to be able to offer and care about people that you do not know is of particular importance”, said Panayiota Salla Iliopoulos, current student of Athens Law School, who was awarded by COSMOTE in 2007.

Except for the monetary award, Scholarship and Distinction Recipients for 2011-2012 were also awarded a free Conn-x connection, mobile phones with COSMOTE Cost Control Plans free of monthly fees as well as netbooks.
