The first ever transoral robotic surgery in Greece to remove a laryngeal tumor using the robotic-assisted Da Vinci S surgical system was successfully performed recently at HYGEIA Hospital.
The procedure was performed on a 65-year-old female who had been diagnosed with cancer on the right half of the larynx.
Dr. Anatoli Pataridou, the surgeon and associate of HYGEIA Hospital who performed the surgery, stated, “Vertical partial laryngectomy is usually performed with external incisions or endoscopically, with the use of laser, thus resulting in extensive injury and pain. With robotic surgery, the procedure was performed transorally, using a special dilator, without making any external incisions. Indeed, owing to the 3D images and the ability to twist the various microsurgery tools via the robotic system’s arms, there was no need for tracheostomy or blood transfusion, while the aesthetic result was perfect.”
Robotic laryngeal surgery has major advantages, as it does not harm the surrounding healthy tissue, while it ensures:
- minimal to no bleeding, both intraoperatively and postoperatively,
- very little postoperative pain, as opposed to other surgical techniques,
- faster healing of the injured areas,
- significantly reduced edema in the area of the upper airway, which eliminates the need for tracheostomy and minimizes postoperative swallowing difficulties,
- shorter hospitalization and faster return to normal activities.
