COSMOTE supports the Greek region through the ‘Our world is you’ action

COSMOTE fulfills the wish of Sonia Charalambidou from Prespes and Dimitra Koufidou from Samothrace to improve everyday life in the border areas of Greece where they live, as part of the “Our World is you” action.

With the invaluable help of Sonia and the active support of the Municipality of Prespes, COSMOTE completed works on the restoration and full renovation of the two municipal buildings, Patoulideio Sports Centre and the Laimos Municipal Library. The buildings have already been delivered to the Municipality and to all the inhabitants of Prespes, and are now ready to host all kinds of cultural and sports activities and become yet again a meeting point.

The Patoulideio Sports Centre has now got central heating, new court for basketball and volleyball, new electronic scoreboard, sitting area and video-projection system. Similarly, the Library has acquired thermal insulation, additional usable space, a fully equipped children’s corner, PCs with free internet access and full equipment for film screenings.

In early March, the Cultural Center in the City of Samothrace is also going to be handed over, completely renovated with the assistance of Dimitra Koufidou and the City of Samothrace. The Cultural Center now features a new library, a fully equipped fitness room, a creative and leisure activities space for children, whilst a video-projection system and PCs with free internet access have been installed.

The cost of the buildings full reconstruction and equipment’s acquisition is covered exclusively by COSMOTE.

To maximize the effect of the above projects, COSMOTE has scheduled a series of both cultural and educational actions, as well as programmes of preventive medicine and therapeutic intervention targeted at all residents of Prespes and Samothrace.

Through the third “Our world is you” action, COSMOTE reiterates that the world of its customers from every corner of the country is a source of inspiration for the company and is trying yet again to make the world a better place.

With the “Our world is you” action, COSMOTE gives everyone the unique opportunity to see his/her own idea of making the world a better place, become reality. The first step was taken in September 2011, when the company invited people to submit their own idea. More than 7,500 people responded to that call, expressing their wish. The first idea that stood out and was fulfilled in December 2011 was the wish of Maria Tsiounis for a world full of children’s smiles. On that occasion, COSMOTE with the active participation of Maria managed to cover essential needs of the Chatzikiriakeio Children’s Foundation. The second action, the “Family Support Program” brought to life the idea of Iliana Karaviotis to support families in need. In collaboration with the Hospitality and Solidarity Centre of the City of Athens (KYADA), COSMOTE fully reconstructed a building offered by KYADA in the area of Makriyannis and undertook to provide a total of 200 families with food, clothing and basic necessities, toys, books, and psychological support for an entire year.

COSMOTE in Greek border areas
The presence of COSMOTE in the outer Greek regions expands beyond the “Our world is you” action. It is both constant and consistent. Among others, in 2010, through the “Navigating the World” programme, the company introduced the new digital era to more than 120 schools and 3,500 pupils in the most remote parts of our country, by installing wireless equipment and offering free internet access. At the same time, COSMOTE supports first-year students at the Greek Higher Education Institutions who come from the outer Greek Regions through the OTE-COSMOTE Scholarships programme. Since 2002, a total of 126 Scholarships and 257 Honorary Distinctions have been awarded, worth over EUR 2 million .
