Health services similar to those of urban centers are now available to the residents and visitors of some of the most remote islands of the Aegean, with the “National Telemedicine Network” completed by the OTE Group. The new network is based on the SYZEFXIS Public Data Network and comprises of 43 telemedicine units which interconnect health centers on the Aegean islands with central hospitals of Piraeus and the region.

Each telemedicine unit consists of a specially designed booth, equipped with a high-definition camera, screen and special medical instruments streaming live the indications of the examinations. Through the booth, doctors and patients can communicate with consultanting doctors in Piraeus’ hospitals, watching each other in physical size. In that way the doctor’s physical presence is simulated in the place where the patient is located thus eliminating the distance to central hospitals, reducing unnecessary ground or air transportations.

Through medical instruments connected to the platform, all indications from the examinations carried out by the doctor/nurse-companion are available in real time to the specialised doctor-consultant in a remote location. During the examination the patient and the doctor have direct communication without interference or delays in video and sound synchronisation. 250 doctors have already completed their training in the use of telemedicine units, and can offer comprehensive health services.

The 43 telemedicine units created by the OTE Group for the 2nd Regional Healthcare Administration of Piraeus & the Aegean, with Cisco’s technology, have been installed in 30 health centers on Aegean islands, in 12 regional and central hospitals and one in the operations center of the Ministry of Health. The islands covered by the telemedicine network are: Amorgos, Andros, Astypalea, Ikaria, Ios, Kalymnos, Karpathos, Kassos, Kastelorizo, Kythira, Kos, Leros, Lemnos, Milos, Mykonos, Mytilini, Naxos, Nisyros, Oinousses, Paros, Patmos, Rhodes, Samos, Santorini, Sifnos, Symi, Syros, Tinos, Fournoi and Chios.

Apart from telemedicine and teleconsulting services, the National Telemedicine Network offers tele-learning services, enabling the training of medical, nursing and administrative personnel in real time.

The project was concluded under the NSRF co-funding and its implementation by the OTE Group was made in such a way as to be easily upgradeable and expandable.

The development of modern high-tech services is part of the OTE Group strategy to offer value-added services in the field of e-health, for the efficient operation of hospital units, and the improvement of the level of services provided to patients.
