Sustainability and Transparency at the Centre of Business Strategies

The increasing number of data available to citizens and investors has led to a need for companies to communicate their decisions in a quick and transparent way, in particular in areas related to climate change and human rights.

Enel has therefore decided to support Empowering Sustainable Decisions, the fifth edition of the GRI Global Conference – among the world’s leading events dedicated to corporate sustainability and transparency – which will be held 18-20 May in Amsterdam with the participation of more than 1,500 people.

The conference is promoted by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), an international independent organisation that helps businesses, governments and other organisations understand and communicate the impact of sustainability on their business.

“We are pleased to support the fifth edition of the GRI Global Conference, reflecting our commitment to an open dialogue with the numerous representatives in the global sustainability movement”, declared our CEO Francesco Starace. “The implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, set for 2030, should be driven by those who are capable of aligning economic targets with the promotion of social and environmental priorities. Since 2007, our collaboration with GRI has allowed us to put sustainability at the heart of our industrial strategies”.

We have been partnering with GRI for years, in order to promote the use of sustainability information in corporate decision making processes. Together we are working on the identification of new sustainability and reporting trends, to redefine reporting practices in order to strengthen the role of environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors in corporate reporting. In such a way, companies will be able to monitor and predict the evolution of sustainability-related issues, rather than merely reacting to them.

Together with GRI, we have created and promoted – in collaboration with SAP and the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship – Reporting 2025, a project that aims to define the key issues that companies must face in their transition towards a fully sustainable economy.

“Enel is a world leader in the renewable energy sector and it has pledged to go carbon neutral by 2050”, highlighted GRI CEO Michael Meehan. “Our partnership with Enel is helping to create a shared vision of a future in which the power of innovation for sustainability will lead to a new era in corporate reporting, which will be digital, responsible and interactive”.

Since 2003, we have produced annual Sustainability Reports, laying out our Group’s efforts in areas such as sustainable innovation, protection of the environment and community relations. The document is drafted in accordance with the guidelines set by the Global Reporting Initiative, which for the ninth consecutive year has assigned us the highest Application Level (A+) for our commitment to a thorough and transparent sustainability report.

This marks yet another important step in the path that we have undertaken to adopt economic and social sustainability practices and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, for a fully sustainable environment.
