For the 12th consecutive year, young boys and girls received a total of EUR 345,328, a substantial aid that will help them stay focused on their studies. Ever since the programme was established in 2002, 146 Scholarships and 283 Honorary Distinctions have been awarded in total, worth more than EUR 2.4 million. More than 2,500 students have showed their interest and eventually more than 1,100 students submitted their application.
The celebratory event was held at the Administrative Hall of OTE in Maroussi, in presence of the Chairman and CEO of OTE Group Mr Michael Tsamaz and the Special Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Culture & Religious Affairs Mr Thanassis Kyriazis.
Addressing the audience at the event, Mr Michael Tsamaz underlined the importance of education in shaping the character of young people, while he encouraged them to always outdo themselves by saying: “Much of what is done today is painful and hard, but you must believe that these things change Greece into a better Greece. Your admission to University and your distinction mean that despite the difficult conditions, you did your best and won the battle. Do not become complacent, do not settle for easiness, continue to struggle and reach as far as you can! Work, share your knowledge to change the world for the better and make yourselves better too.”
The young students had the opportunity to be inspired by the speech of Mr Panagiotis Kotronaros, the leader of the Greek mission that conquered Everest. Mr Kotronaros shared his personal journey and explained how each man can overcome difficulties and obstacles with perseverance and dedication and become an example for those who have faith in their dreams and goals.
Except for the monetary award, Scholarship and Distinction Recipients for the year 2013-2014 were also awarded a free OTE Double Play 24Mbps connection, mobile phones with COSMOTE Student Cost Control Plan free of monthly fees for the duration of their studies at their respective schools and free OTE TV services for a year. Moreover, recipients also received a Tablet.
