Rueil-Malmaison (France) — Schneider Electric, the global specialist in energy management, is taking part in the UN’s World Environment Day 2014, this Thursday, June 5, by involving all its employees. To mark this event, Schneider Electric is organising local initiatives across all of its sites worldwide to raise awareness of environmental issues among its stakeholders and inform them about actions undertaken by the Group since 2005 as part of its commitment to sustainable development.

Schneider Electric’s involvement in World Environment Day is part of the company’s global campaign to integrate sustainable development at the very heart of its strategy, focusing on the following 5 actions:
  • Improving energy efficiency on Schneider Electric sites;
  • Reducing the Group’s carbon footprint;
  • Reducing water waste and use;
  • Designing environmentally friendly products;
  • Providing very effective solutions to reduce the footprint of iconic buildings (the first “zero emission” research station Princess Elisabeth Antarctica, Earth Rangers offices, Refuge du Goûter).
“As a global specialist in energy management, we should lead by example. Schneider Electric is developing a corporate culture in which the environment should be a fundamental concern for all our employees whether to meet growing customer needs, to limit our impact on the environment or to drive responsible growth.” said Gilles Vermot Desroches, Senior VP Sustainability, Schneider Electric.
World Environment Day is an opportunity for the Group to communicate progress achieved in terms of carbon footprint, eco-design, and eco-manufacturing. Schneider Electric has set ambitious environmental targets, some of which are included in the Planet and Society Barometer – the company’s sustainable development scorecard:
  • To reduce CO2 emissions from transport by 10%;
  • To increase share of revenue generated by Green Premium products to 75%;
  • To reduce its total energy consumption by 10%;
  • To certify all manufacturing sites in compliance with standards; having started with ISO 14001 in the 1990s, the Group is expanding its commitment to water, energy, and waste management in order to reduce the company’s overall impact on the planet.
In addition to these global objectives, each country or site voluntarily takes the lead to implement actions at their local level

Schneider Electric Korea installed a solar-powered lighting system in its logistics centers integrated in a smart energy management system, which helped streamline the lighting system through tighter control of the light on/off function. This new system cut power consumption by 61% between 2012 and 2013;

Schneider Electric Italy helped raise awareness of water consumption among employees by implementing measures to reduce water usage: On the one hand, sensors and a control system were installed to improve the automated watering system (it stops functioning when it rains). On the other hand, all employees were informed on how best to conserve water and encouraged to put forward their water saving ideas. Water consumption and use were then monitored monthly. These actions have helped reduce water consumption by 37% since 2011;

Schneider Electric France launched operation “GreenMugs” in 2011 across all 13 sites in Grenoble, whereby mugs were handed out to employees to replace the plastic cups used in coffee machines. The beverage station provider was contracted to provide machines that can detect if a mug is present to avoid dispensing a cup. Since 2011, more than 5,700 mugs have been distributed to staff and the use of plastic cups has fallen by 36% a year, equivalent to more than 69,000 cups. The next step is to re-use cups that are still used, and to recycle the coffee grounds and plastic bottles.

World Environment Day (‘WED’) was launched in 1972 by the UN as part of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). It aims to encourage worldwide awareness and action for the environment. Everyone — individuals and organisations alike — are invited to become agents of change and develop responsible actions to help protect the planet. This year, World Environment Day is dedicated to Small Island Developing States (SIDS) within the broader context of climate change, focusing on the central theme “Raise your voice, not the sea level”.
