Company Profile

Boroume (“We Can”) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to reduce food waste and to fight malnutrition in Greece through:

our saving & offering food activities through programs at every stage of the food chain (Saving & Offering Food, Boroume at the Farmers’ Market, Boroume Gleaning, We Are Family)
raising awareness on the issue of food waste and the importance of prevention (awareness raising program “Every Meal Matters” , Boroume at School, Alliance for the Reduction of Food Waste, Certification scheme “No Food Waste”)

Boroume has been awarded the European Citizenship Award 2017 by the European Parliament and is an active member of the EU Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste since its creation in 2016.

Our vision is to develop a social movement to reduce food waste and at the same time increase nutritional support to people in need based on volunteer support.

Boroume in numbers:

We save and offer more than 30.000 portions of food every day
Since 2012 till today we have saved & offered more than 60.000.000 portions of food with an estimated value of 90.000.000 € (average cost: 1,5€ per portion)
Thanks to the Boroume method of saving and offering food, 1 € of operational costs results in 65 portions of food for those in need
More than 24.000 students have followed our educational program “Boroume at School”
We have saved and offered over 750 tons of fresh fruits and vegetables with our program “Boroume at the Farmers’ Market”
75 tons of fruits and vegetables have been saved and offered with our program “Boroume Gleaning”
The food we have saved is estimated at 85.260.000 CO2 eq that were not released into the atmosphere
Over 2.400 companies have offered food through our network
We collaborate with over 650 charitable institutions, soup kitchens and municipal social services all over Greece
Over 2.500 volunteers have supported Boroume since we started our operations
We have saved and offered food in more than 80 areas in Greece
As part of our program “We Are Family”, we have converted over 1.679.164 euros of donations into supermarket vouchers supporting more than 40.000 recipients
More than 65 members (companies, educational instutions, etc) participate in the Alliance for the Reduction of Food Waste. The Alliance operates under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment & Energy.
