Pedtrauma is a non-profit, non-governmental organization which was founded in 1998 in Athens by a small number of doctors and parents. Its sole purpose is to raise awareness on children’s accidents in Greece, reduce their number and severity and to improve care once an accident has occurred.
According to the statistics of the Hospitals and Health Centers equipped by “Pedtrauma”, from 2010 up to the present date more than 1.605.000 children have benefitted from our Charity.
In 2021, 295.000 children passed through the Trauma Centers and the Paediatric Departments equipped by “Pedtrauma”.
“Pedtrauma” is making a great effort to reduce children’s accidents and improve injured children’s care through the implementation of the following:
a) By opening Trauma Centers in all the major Public Children’s Hospitals in Athens and throughout Greece.
b) By upgrading and equipping the Paediatric Departments and Clinics of the Hospitals and the Health Centers with the necessary machinery.
c) By helping finance seminars where specialized doctors train surgeons, doctors, nurses, and Ambulance Paramedics on how to help the injured children the fastest and best way possible (Medical Seminars Program “Leonidas Georgopoulos”). We have already managed to train 1.915 doctors, nurses, and Ambulance Paramedics.
d) By educating children on trauma prevention. In particular, we visit schools and talk to children, teachers and parents about how to prevent accidents from occurring. Staying true to its motto “to serve and not to be served”, The American College of Greece organized many initiatives regarding the situation in Ukraine. As a result of a call to the ACG community in support of the people of Ukraine, the office of Public Affairs collected pharmaceutical products and medical supplies that filled 49 big boxes. The initiative, supported by ACG students of all our divisions, faculty, staff and the Pierce Parents Association, run from March 21st until March 30th. The supplies were donated to the NGO “Doctors of the World”, to be delivered to the Ukrainian people, along with contributions by other entities. Additionally, we collected the amount of 1,000 euros, which was collected from small donations by individual community members, the book drive, organized by the Deree & Alba Libraries and the sale of reusable water bottles by the Office of Public Affairs.
“Doctors of the World” thanked us in person during an event we hosted soon after, with a presentation on volunteerism. Their president, Dr. Chara Tziouvara MD and her colleague Angeliki Mavrikou (D’91), addressed a joint group of Pierce IB and Deree students, faculty & staff.
Before that, on March 11, the ACG – Institute of Global Affairs had hosted an open discussion about the war and the situation in Ukraine, moderated by three Deree professors specializing in International Relations. Among many students, faculty and staff, two of the Ukrainian students who currently study at Deree also attended and took part in the discussion that followed.
Right after the Russian invasion to Ukraine, President Horner, in his message to the ACG community, had emphasized that ACG remains “focused on pursuing its mission to build an ethos of mutual respect, to foster the practice of sincere and open dialogue and to promote peace and justice within the framework of Hellenic and Western values”.
Most importantly, ACG has already accepted Alissa, a qualified Ukrainian student-refugee, who is now studying at the Pierce IB program and we have officially informed the Ministry of Education that we can offer a number of additional scholarships to Ukrainian refugees that fulfill the necessary requirements, to study at Deree.

Dr. Constantinos Papadias, Executive Director of the Research, Technology & Innovation Network (RTIN), Scientific Director of the ACG Research Center (ACG-RC) and Professor of Information Technology at Deree and Alba, participated in an online discussion entitled “Innovation as a Driving Force for Greek-American Relations.” The discussion was part of a series of online events in the context of the ELIAMEP Research Program “Greek-American Economic Relations and the Future of the Greek Economy,” organized with the support of the U.S. Embassy in Athens.
Dr. Papadias was one of the invited speakers who discussed the importance of American technological investments for the Greek national economy and close Greek-American collaboration in innovation. Geoffrey R. Pyatt, U.S. Ambassador to the Hellenic Republic, gave the welcoming remarks.
Dr. Papadias discussed how the ACG 150 plan is leveraging educational programs for economic and social impact as well as consolidating, supporting and expanding ACG’s activities in performing research, creating technology and fostering innovation. ACG is providing a unique environment for promoting research, innovation and technology development and transfer through the RTIN.
Dr. Papadias commented how Greek startups are intricately linked to the U.S. through capital funding, academic partnerships and investment opportunities. Due to the pandemic, the employment paradigm has changed and employees are working remotely across time zones. Greece is an attractive destination for U.S. companies since it’s a safe, stable environment with talented and educated workers.
In the last few years, the whole infrastructure in Greece has improved and we can work in many domains remotely. This makes the country an attractive destination, especially for Greeks from the diaspora who have moved back to Greece during the pandemic without changing their job status. We should expect more of this trend in the future.

This year’s SEV Center of Excellence in Creative Leadership’s online conference had it all: amazing talks on the challenges and rewards of the digital age, the perils and joys of marrying innovation and tradition, and a new leader for the Center
Distinguished speakers from Greece’s leading industries, stimulating panel discussions, and applied research findings were the elements of the SEV Center of Excellence in Creative Leadership’s online conference, entitled “Tradition and Innovation in a Digital World.” This event aimed to round up the 2020-2021 applied research of the Center on how Greek companies can utilize tradition as a source of competitiveness and innovation, as well as give us a sneak peek of the research topics for 2022.
A new year brought a new leader. Dr. Nikos Mylonopoulos, Associate Professor of Digital Business at Alba, was named Director of the SEV Center, a position held until recently by Dr. Charalambos Mainemelis, Professor of Organizational Behavior at Alba.
Dr. David G. Horner, ACG’s President, opened the conference by emphasizing the importance of having resources to help us comprehend, cope and create new strategies for success amid pressure. Dr. Horner stated, “The SEV Center of Excellence in Creative Leadership provides such resources and assists all of us in facing the unexpected challenges of today and tomorrow.”
For professionals looking to balance immediate and future challenges, Alexandros Chatzopoulos, the General Director of SEV noted that business leaders need to work in the present and plan by empowering those who will shape the future. Furthermore, Stelios Argyros, Alba’s Chairman of the Board, emphasized that “creative and responsible leaders consolidate tradition, strengthen competitiveness and contribute actively and increasingly to the complex developments that affect entrepreneurship.”
Learning to speak the language of the digital age is one thing but saying something meaningful in it is another
Dr. Charalambos Mainemelis shared the Center’s findings from their research on a sample of Greek businesses during the 2020-2021 period. According to the results, every business, irrespective of its size, needs to identify those elements that differentiate it from the rest and make it more authentic. They need to “Learn to speak the language of the digital age.” In some cases, preservation or promotion of “Greekness” could become a factor of innovation as well as a competitive advantage.
So how can a business have a competitive edge while still keeping its tradition alive? Business leaders need to integrate an innovation mentality and create a culture of creative synergies that currently does not exist. Now more than ever, there is an urgent need to connect Greek businesses with the innovation ecosystem and higher education institutions to expand the circle of innovation in Greece.
Dr. Kostas Axarloglou, Dean of Alba, and Dr. Nikos Mylonopoulos discussed the Center’s research agenda for 2022 as well as the biggest challenge for creative leaders today. These executives need to manage difficulties while creating a reconciliatory culture to promote innovation. Both speakers underlined the tremendous importance of research, as it contributes substantially to the redesign of organizations and the adaptation of businesses and leaders to the digital age.
Being innovative takes courage: lifting the stigma of failure and breaking new ground
Finally, the conference rounded out with a lively discussion from successful executives of companies operating in the Greek market who shared their experiences. Their companies are examples of how a large business with a long tradition can adapt during periods of upheaval via digital innovation. We were pleased to be joined by Jannis Delis, COO Merchant Services, Euronet Worldwide, Yiannis Papidis, Chief Technology and Business Change Officer of Dixons South-East Europe, Yannis Paraschos, IT Director of TITAN Group and Vassilis Trapezanoglou, Chairman of the Board of Viva Bank and Founder and Managing Director of DISC SA.
The panelists emphasized the need for creating a professional environment wherein business leaders are pushed to become adaptable and innovative by learning to accept failure and mistakes. They all agreed on the importance of creating a culture of innovation, keeping an open mind and learning from the past to build a better future.
