The third edition of the Formula E World Championship takes off with the victory of defending champion Buemi. Enel passes the test, as debut Official Power Partner of the electric Formula One.
A silent electric “storm” hit the heart of Hong Kong on Saturday, October 9. A track set up in the heart of the Chinese metropolis, between Victoria Harbour and the skyscraper-lined district, saw the first ePrix of the 2016-17 edition of Formula E, the world championship of electric cars.
The race confirmed the stars of last season, with the victory of defending champion Sebastién Buemi (Renault-e.dams), ahead of Lucas Di Grassi (ABT-Audi), who made a spectacular comeback from nineteenth place, and Nick Heidfeld (Mahindra).
Enel made its official debut this year as Official Power Partner of Formula E. Behind the eVillage scenes surrounding the circuit, our Infrastructure and Network technicians set up a system to capture critical energy parameters as part of the first phase of the Enel MicrGrid roll out. 22 specially designed Enel metering kits where installed around the event area, and during 48 hours they relayed specific energy data needed by Enel to dimension the energy generation and storage package that, together with metering kits, is at the heart of the Formula E MicroGrid project.
Real time consumption and energy flows were monitored and shared with Fe throughout the various phases of the event as the single-seaters raced up to 220 km/h, traveling across the two-thousand-meter Hong Kong circuit in just over a minute. In parallel fans voted helped their favorite drivers through the fan boost: extra power assigned to the most voted driver through an online application.
The data collected during the race and the entire event in general will be used to improve the application of these technologies, moving from the competition to the creation of real innovative services. The objective is to improve the quality of people’s lives, reduce consumption and make cities more sustainable. Starting with mobility, enabling the deployment and use of electric vehicles, thanks to fast and widespread charging networks.
The Formula E adventure has just begun. The next event is scheduled for November 12, in Marrakech, Morocco, where a race will take place during the World Climate Conference(COP 22), scheduled for November 7 to 18. We will set up our smart and sustainable “racing” city here as well. Our wide range of innovative e-mobility technologies demonstrates that a new model for energy, development and mobility is already a reality. Creating systems that can make an important contribution in winning the most important competition, that of the fight against climate change.
